Averrhoa carambola, commonly called star fruit or carambola, produces crisp, juicy, star-shaped golden fruit. It’s a fast-growing, heat-loving tree that’s low maintenance and makes a lovely, useful addition to a warm-climate garden.
The fruit has a sweet-tart flavor with a crisp, juicy texture. Eat it fresh, slice it as a colorful garnish or salad ingredient, or squeeze for a light, tangy juice — the star-shaped slices are especially pretty when served.
This is a heat-loving, low-maintenance tree that prefers full sun and regular water during dry periods. It suits tropical and subtropical climates (generally USDA zones 10–11) and is sensitive to frost. Left to mature it will grow into a tree roughly 10–20 ft, or you can keep it smaller with pruning.
We’re C&M Homestead in Richmond Heights, FL. We’ve been growing tropical fruit for many years and are happy to offer local pickup; delivery is available only locally.
