Sapodilla (Manilkara zapota), also called chikoo or naseberry, is a long-lived evergreen that produces wonderfully sweet, brown-sugar-flavored fruit. It’s a classic tropical tree for warm climates and a nice addition for anyone who likes sweet, mellow fruit.
Ripe sapodilla fruit has a smooth, malty texture and a caramel-like sweetness. Enjoy it fresh, scooped from the skin, or blended into smoothies and desserts — simple ways to let that brown-sugar flavor shine.
This tree thrives in full sun and does best in USDA zones 10–12. It’s drought, wind and salt tolerant once established, and responds well to pruning if you want to keep it smaller and manageable. Provide regular water while it’s getting established, then reduce frequency as roots develop.
